When installed unfinished hardwood is to be sanded, i.e. shaved off about 1/16"-1/8" wiht sand paper of different grit. It will make unfinished wood perfectly even and ready for staining and finishing. Unfinished hardwood (when done) looks like even solid wood surface. As for the Prefinished hardwood in most cases you will see small grooves in between hardwood planks, which are getting more vivd within some time when dust, dirt gets there. Besides, Unfinished hardwood can be refinished and Prefinished one is not supposed to be refinished. Besides, unfinished hardwood is the only wood that can be installed with boarders, inlets and medallions. Though, Prefinished hardwood floor is factory finished with several coats of UV-cured polyurethane applied. These factory finishes are tough and durable. Installing a prefinished floor eliminates the time, the dust and the odors associated with the on-site sanding and finishing of an unfinished product. A prefinished floor can be installed in a day. An unfinished flooring installation may require twice as much time or more for the same area. |

There are about 7~11 factory applied coats of finish on a pre-finished hardwood. The finished wear layers of pre-finished hardwood floors are far superior to any finish that can be applied during the construction of your new home, or the remodel of your existing home. Factory applied finish coats are more resistant to abrasion, and will not show swirl marks, hairs, dust, and other imperfections often associated with "from scratch" hardwood flooring. One of the disadvantages if the pre-finished hardwood is not supposed to be refinished and ones being scratched stays for good. |

Water-based polyurethanes provide a clear finish and have low odor. You can recoat them in two hours and clean your tools with water. If you start early enough in the day, you can apply the recommended four coats and sleep in the room that night. Oil-based polyurethanes leave an amber glow and require fewer coats. But the five-hour wait between coats and 12-hour wait after the last coat will put a bedroom out of commission for a few days—and you’ll have to put up with a strong odor. Water-based finishes dry fast— most within two hours—so you can apply several coats in a day and use the room that night. They have minimal odor and clean up with water too. But water-based polys have their tradeoffs. They cost twice as much as oil-based polys. They won’t give wood the rich glow that oil-based polys impart; some even consider them cold looking.

Usually when refinished or instllating unfinished hardwood flooring we apply 3 coats - 1 coat of Sealer and 2 coats of Finish. But we can apply as many coats as Customer wants - it is just a matter of extra expenses for the Customer. |
